Ligue 2 Standings: How the 2026/27 Table Works

This page shows the live Ligue 2 standings for the 2026/27 season of France’s second-tier football league, and explains how to read the table below. The standings update automatically as results come in, so rather than listing positions here, this guide covers what the table is telling you: how the league is scored, which places mean promotion to Ligue 1, which mean the play-offs, and which mean relegation. The current table sits directly beneath this paragraph.

How the Ligue 2 table works

Ligue 2 (officially Ligue 2 BKT, after its tyre-brand title sponsor) is an 18-team league that ranks clubs by points earned over a single season. Each club plays every other club twice — once at home and once away — for a total of 34 matches per team and 306 matches across the season. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point, and a loss 0 points. The club with the most points at the top of the table is the one performing best; the clubs at the bottom are the ones struggling.

The table itself uses the same columns as most football leagues: games played, wins, draws, losses, goals for and against, goal difference and total points. If any of those column headings are unfamiliar, our guide to how to read a sports standings table walks through every row and column, and the glossary of standings table abbreviations such as GD and Pts explains each label in one line. Ligue 2 sits one level below Ligue 1 in the same way Italy’s Serie B standings sit below Serie A.

What each position in the table means

Position decides everything in Ligue 2: the top of the table leads to Ligue 1, and the bottom leads to the third tier. The exact places below are confirmed for the 2026/27 season.

Table Positions Explained

PositionWhat it means
1st – 2ndAutomatic promotion to Ligue 1 (1st are champions)
3rd – 5thPromotion play-offs, leading to a barrage for a Ligue 1 place
6th – 15thMid-table: no promotion or relegation stakes
16thTwo-legged relegation/promotion barrage against a Ligue 3 side
17th – 18thRelegated directly to Ligue 3 Betclic

Promotion places (1st and 2nd)

The top two clubs are promoted directly to Ligue 1 for the following season. No play-off is needed — finishing 1st or 2nd on the final matchday is enough, and the 1st-placed club is crowned Ligue 2 champion.

Promotion play-off places (3rd to 5th)

Clubs finishing 3rd, 4th and 5th enter the promotion play-offs for a shot at a third Ligue 1 place. The 4th-placed side hosts the 5th-placed side in a single match; the winner then visits the 3rd-placed side in another single match. The winner of that tie goes into a two-legged barrage against the club that finished 16th in Ligue 1, with the survivor taking the final Ligue 1 spot.

The relegation play-off place (16th)

The club that finishes 16th does not drop automatically. Instead it plays a two-legged promotion/relegation barrage against the 3rd-placed team from the division below. Win it and the club stays in Ligue 2; lose it and it is relegated.

Relegation places (17th and 18th)

The bottom two clubs, 17th and 18th, are relegated directly to the third tier. For 2026/27 that division has been reformed and renamed Ligue 3 Betclic (formerly the Championnat National), now run under the French Football Federation, so relegated Ligue 2 clubs drop into Ligue 3.

How teams level on points are separated

When two or more clubs finish on the same number of points, Ligue 2 uses a fixed order of tiebreakers set in the league regulations. The first tiebreaker is overall goal difference (goals scored minus goals conceded); if clubs are still level, the next is the greater number of goals scored. Further criteria, such as head-to-head records, apply if teams cannot be separated. Because these rules decide promotion and relegation in close seasons, it is worth understanding how league points and tiebreakers work before reading too much into two clubs sharing a points total.

Key dates for the 2026/27 season

The 2026/27 Ligue 2 season runs from the weekend of 8 August 2026 to Saturday 22 May 2027. A few dates shape how the table develops:

  • Season start: weekend of 8 August 2026 (matchday 1).
  • Winter break: after matchday 15 on the weekend of 11 December 2026, with the league resuming on the weekend of 2 January 2027.
  • Final matchday: matchday 34 on Saturday 22 May 2027, played as a simultaneous round so every result lands at once.
  • No midweek rounds: unlike some seasons, 2026/27 has no Tuesday or Wednesday matchdays.

How the season ends

The league table is the main decider, but the season does not finish the moment matchday 34 is over. Once the final standings are set, the top two are already promoted and the bottom two already relegated. The play-offs then settle the remaining movement: the 4th-versus-5th play-off is scheduled for Tuesday 25 May 2027, the winner meets the 3rd-placed club on Friday 28 May 2027, and the two-legged barrages for the last Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 places follow in early June 2027. So Ligue 2 ends with a mix of a final table and knockout play-offs rather than a single championship final.

How to follow Ligue 2 from New Zealand

From New Zealand the simplest way to follow Ligue 2 is this live standings page, which updates automatically after each round. Kick-off times are a bigger hurdle than the table: New Zealand runs 10 to 12 hours ahead of France depending on daylight saving, so a typical Friday or Saturday evening kick-off in France (around 7–9pm local time) falls in the early morning — roughly 5am to 9am NZST/NZDT — the next day in New Zealand. Television and streaming rights are sold country by country and no New Zealand broadcaster for Ligue 2 is confirmed for 2026/27, so check current local listings for live coverage; for official results and the formal league calendar, the Ligue de Football Professionnel site is the primary source.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
