La Liga 2 Standings: How the Segunda Division Table Works

This page shows the live La Liga 2 standings – the current table for Spain’s second-tier football league, officially known as LaLiga Hypermotion – and explains what every part of it means. The table directly below updates automatically as results come in, so you can see who is top, who is chasing promotion and who is in the relegation zone at a glance. Below the table you will find how the competition is structured, what each position is worth, how teams level on points are separated, the key dates for the current season, and how to follow the action from New Zealand.

What is La Liga 2 (LaLiga Hypermotion)?

La Liga 2 is the second division of Spanish professional football, one level below La Liga and one level above the Primera Federacion. It is run by LaLiga and carries the sponsored name LaLiga Hypermotion. It is a full promotion-and-relegation league: clubs move up to La Liga if they finish high enough and drop to the Primera Federacion if they finish too low, so the table decides real stakes at both ends every season.

How the Segunda Division table works

The table ranks the 22 clubs by points earned over a 42-match regular season. Each team plays every other team twice – once at home and once away. A win is worth 3 points, a draw 1 point and a loss 0 points, and clubs are listed from most points at the top to fewest at the bottom.

The columns show matches played, wins, draws, losses, goals for, goals against, goal difference and total points. If you are unsure what a heading means, our guide to standings table abbreviations explains every one, and our walkthrough on how to read a sports standings table shows how the rows and columns fit together. Because the regular season has no final match or grand final to crown a champion, the team sitting top of the table after all 42 rounds is the La Liga 2 champion.

What the positions in the table mean

Three clubs are promoted to La Liga each season and four are relegated, so the top and bottom of the table both carry heavy consequences. Here is exactly which positions matter.

Promotion places (1st to 6th)

The top two clubs are promoted to La Liga automatically – they go up directly with no further matches to play. Positions 3rd through 6th qualify for the promotion play-offs, a mini-knockout that decides the third and final promotion spot. Reserve or “B” teams are not eligible for promotion, so if one finishes in a play-off position, it does not take part.

Promotion play-offs explained

The four play-off clubs meet in two-legged semi-finals: 4th plays 5th and 3rd plays 6th, with the lower-placed team hosting the first leg and the higher-placed team at home for the decisive second leg. The two semi-final winners then contest a two-legged final. Ties are decided on aggregate score; if the two legs finish level, 30 minutes of extra time is played, and if the score is still level the better-placed team from the regular season goes through. The winner of the final is promoted to La Liga.

Relegation places (19th to 22nd)

The bottom four clubs – 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd – are relegated to the Primera Federacion, the third tier of Spanish football. There is no relegation play-off: the drop is decided purely on final league position.

Key Points

  • 1st-2nd: automatic promotion to La Liga.
  • 3rd-6th: promotion play-offs for the third La Liga place (reserve teams are not eligible).
  • 7th-18th: mid-table – no promotion or relegation stakes.
  • 19th-22nd: relegation to the Primera Federacion.
  • Champion = the club top of the table after all 42 rounds; there is no grand final.

How ties are broken when teams are level on points

When two or more clubs finish on the same number of points, La Liga 2 separates them using a fixed order of tiebreakers rather than goal difference alone. The criteria are applied in this sequence:

  1. Head-to-head points in the matches between the tied clubs.
  2. Head-to-head goal difference in those matches.
  3. Overall goal difference across the whole season.
  4. Goals scored across the whole season.
  5. Fair-play points (the disciplinary record).

One important detail: the head-to-head criteria only count once all the matches between the tied clubs have been played, so early in the season the table may be ordered on overall goal difference instead. The exact order of criteria is set in the competition regulations each season – our explainer on how sports standings are ranked covers why leagues use head-to-head and goal difference in this way.

Key dates for the current season

The 2026/27 Segunda Division regular season kicked off on 14 August 2026 and runs through to June 2027, with the 22 clubs playing 42 rounds across roughly ten months. The promotion play-offs follow immediately after the regular season finishes, typically over about two weeks in June, after which the three promoted clubs and four relegated clubs are confirmed. Fixtures are usually spread across Friday to Monday each round, and kick-off slots can move for television, so always check the official schedule for the exact date and time of a specific match.

How to follow La Liga 2 from New Zealand

In New Zealand, LaLiga is broadcast by beIN Sports Connect, which holds the exclusive LaLiga rights for Australia and New Zealand through the 2026/27 season; its New Zealand schedule has carried Segunda Division fixtures alongside the top flight. beIN Sports Connect is a streaming service you can watch in a web browser or through its app, so it is the most reliable verified route for Spanish second-division football in NZ – check the beIN schedule to confirm which specific La Liga 2 matches are listed, as not every fixture is guaranteed to be shown.

On timing, New Zealand runs roughly 10 to 12 hours ahead of Spain, depending on daylight saving in both countries. Because Segunda Division matches usually kick off in the Spanish afternoon or evening, most of them fall in the early morning to late morning the next day in New Zealand (NZDT or NZST). For live scores without a broadcast, the standings table at the top of this page updates automatically as results are confirmed.

If you follow more than one league, the same table logic applies to our guides on Serie B standings in Italy and Premier League standings in England.
